GREEN FINGERED FUN WITH BELLE VALE SHOPPING CENTRE

IMG-20170330-WA0002

Since 2008, becoming ‘greener’ has been an important part of Belle Vale Shopping Centre’s corporate social responsibility policy and the Centre aims to help spread the message within the community, starting with an eco-friendly craft workshop and tree planting project.

The Bella Bee’s Green Garden campaign is now underway at Belle Vale Shopping Centre. A giant eco pledge wall can be found on the main mall at the Centre, and it is encouraging shoppers to think of the environment and pledge to make ‘greener’ choices. This includes promises such as switching the light off when leaving a room and using a re-usable shopping bag.

As part of the Bella Bee’s Green Garden event, on Saturday 8th April between 10am and 4pm an eco-craft workshop will be held on the mall. Children are invited to nurture their gardening skills by personalising their very own plant pot to take home and grow a plant in. The workshop has lots of high quality craft materials and is completely free; shoppers can simply drop in at a time that suits them.

Paul Wilson added “The pledge wall at the Centre is a great green activity for our shoppers as it highlight’s the achievements already made by the centre with the recycling and management of waste on site. It also gives tips on how to become ‘greener’ and the eco craft workshop is a perfect way for younger generations looking to get involved too.”

Furthermore, Belle Vale Shopping Centre has partnered with Norman Pannell Primary School as part of the campaign, with a special eco planting project that has already begun on the school’s grounds.

The planting project will change a blank, uninspiring field into a green haven to help support the environment. Paul Wilson, Centre Manager along with Mr Simpson, Head Teacher at Norman Pannell and representatives from the Centre’s contractors Bagnall & Morris (waste management contractor) and WH Snow (Building Contractor), oversaw Year 5 and Year 6 pupils as they planted the first row of trees. The project strengthens the Shopping Centre’s community link with the local school as well as transforming the site into a more interesting, diverse and useful environment.

Paul Wilson commented “The first phase of the planting project was a great success. The pupils at Norman Pannell enjoyed getting stuck into the gardening activity and it is the aim of the project that future classes will also have the opportunity to add to the garden. This project has, so far, earnt Belle Vale Shopping Centre recognition from the Carbon Footprint Trust and we hope to see more success stories come from this campaign.”

The Shopping Centre has an excellent green status thanks to the recent efforts of the Centre Management team, supported by their Waste Management contractor. In late 2016, the Centre was awarded a Green Apple Bronze Award for their waste management strategies, in achieving ZERO waste to landfill and increasing recycling. The Centre is using their experience to bring environmental causes to the forefront of the public mind, through fun, educational and entertaining activity.

The workshop is being run by, and in partnership with, St Cyrils Children and Youth Project Charity. During the month of April, any child signing up to the Bella Bees Kids club, will be entered into a prize draw to win a hamper of gardening goodies for beginners. The entry forms can be found outside the ‘eco wall’ and we have changed the colour of the forms to  green to match the environmental initiatives!

BELLA BEE’S GREEN GARDEN

1st April to 30th April 2017

April 1st will see the launch of the Centre’s ‘Eco Pledge’ Wall, that will be installed on the front of the former Perfect Home Unit by the Mall Cafe. The pledge wall will be in the centre throughout the month of April, as partPledge Window LHS of Bella Bees Green Garden Theme.

The Eco Wall is aimed at encouraging shoppers to pledge to help the environment, no matter how small their contribution is. The three pledges the Centre has chosen are; ‘always bring a reusable shopping bag with them’ or ‘to walk or take public transport as much as possible’ or ‘to turn the lights off when they leave a room’. Each pledge will be a hand print shape leaf on a tree – to keep in with the Eco theme & representing the carbon footprint. To make a pledge, shoppers are invited to write their names on a hand print to make that pledge. Local schools will also be participating, as this will be a great way to help educate the younger generation about environmental issues.

A second panel will also be installed on a window, to show the statistics and achievements already met by Belle Vale Shopping Centres’ Waste Management Strategy. In November 2016 the Centre was presented with a Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice.
