AWARD WINNING GREEN AND CLEAN SHOPPING CENTRE
Belle Vale Shopping Centre is the proud recipient of a National award for their environmental initiatives. The Green Apple Environment Awards recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world.
Since 2008, becoming ‘greener’ has been an important part of the Shopping Centre’s corporate social responsibility policy. Over the years, the centre management team has completely changed how they deal with waste on site. Cardboard and polythene are made into bales on-site for recycling, drink cans and plastic bottles are separated at source and all residual waste goes to a facility to be processed and sent to a power station, to generate electricity and steam for district heating. New bins on the mall areas of the Shopping Centre also help tenants and shoppers to recycle easily. The Centre has continuously reduced waste to landfill and in 2012, achieved their target of ZERO waste to landfill that has been maintained since.
In 2015, the management team chose to work with Carbon Neutral Bagnall & Morris Waste Services to provide innovative solutions to their waste management systems. The centre has now started to further improve their waste segregation and recycling through the introduction of food and glass bins across the site.
Alongside these procedural changes, the Centre also held a community event to promote their ‘green’ credentials. Posters were displayed around the mall to encourage shoppers & tenants to support the recycling agenda and a Waste Management Roadshow was held on site by the waste management contractor and the Centre mascot, Bella the Bee.
Paul Wilson, Centre Manager, said of the accolade ’we are extremely proud to receive a Green Apple Award in recognition of our achievements. Over the last few years the centre has made a significant reduction in its impact on the environment, as all the waste created on site is either recycled or redirected to be made into new energy. The site staff work really hard to ensure all recycling opportunities are taken, but with further support from the centres tenants & shoppers, we can continue to improve the recycling initiatives. The waste management costs to the Centre have also been significantly reduced which means any savings can re-invested into other initiatives to the benefit of our shoppers and the local community.’ The awards presentation will be held in November at Westminster Palace and the centre will then find out if they have won a Gold, Silver or Bronze award.
This award comes only a few months after another award for the Centre, achieved in the field of marketing and events. The BCSC Purple Apple Merit Award was given to Belle Vale Shopping Centre in May for their partnership work with Gateacre School for ‘The BIG Little Library’ project.
